Welcome to my own private paradise... Pic taken 8/04/07 from the private beach.
Enjoying my creativity...
Okay, so I know that I don't take advantage of all of the Mindsay features sometimes (still haven't started using that whole "tag" thing... I know how to, I just don't think me going crazy is tag-worthy)... but I love how I can go in and play with colors, fonts, pictures, and generally anything I want. Each of us here has a unique, personal background that can be easily identified (most of the time) to that person. And, when I've been going nuts, sometimes it makes it better just to sit and redo things, here, on my desktop, wherever, just as a change of pace. I don't entirely live on my computer, but it's something that I look at a lot daily, as I'm sure most of you do, too. Right now, my background on my comp is the standard windows bright yellow tulips. Not anything super spectacular, but very enjoyable, to me. My screen saver is blue and yellow squiggly thingys, and my winamp is yellow, orange, and green. I love playing with color. It can affect your whole mood sometimes, or sometimes you have to make your colors match your mood. On a daily basis, each of us makes a decision (conscious or otherwise), about what colors we're going to let drift into our lives. Whether it's painting a room in our houses, or picking out a great new sweater, color reflects a lot about who we are and how we're feeling. Currently, I'm in navy sweats. (Actually, they're coast guard sweats, but the color is navy
.) It's a comforting color for me... Dark, warm, something I can sink into. Sometimes I wear pink or bright purple. And every once in a while, when I'm feeling particularly cheerful (or I'm cleaning, cuz I don't like it much normally), I wear yellow. It's something we can control, most times. Think of how a bright blue sky changes your mood when all you've seen is gray for a while. Or the red and purple sunset on a warm summer evening. The warm summer evening is beautiful in and of itself... but how much would be missing if that vivid color wasn't there? A woman's attitude changing when going from a basic black to a cherry red dress? The cut and style might be the same, but her attitude (most times) will not be when the color is changed. It's why we paint things oranges and yellows and reds... blues, greens, browns... Color has an affect on how we feel, and how we perform.
I'll never forget the day I took a tour of a local prison here in Williamsport. Instead of the typical gray, disheartening walls, there were bright red, orange, and yellow stripes painted to boost the inmates' moral. While I think it would have been more advantageous to paint them blues or greens as it would be more soothing, the fact of the matter is that even the county realized how color could affect the people staying there. And it did help, in fact... there were less fights and less problems with the inmates since the stripes were introduced. Now, I know this may seem like an odd study, and I'm not sure that it could work in every situation, but I think it's worthy to note that color is an impacting factor on our lives.
Did you ever wonder what would happen if hospitals would adopt the same attitude as their children's wards? When there is an older person lying there in the sterile and sometimes harsh white, what is there to comfort them? I know that it would probably be expensive, not to mention difficult, to paint every room in a hospital, and that there are advantages with cleaning for everything to be white. But seriously... a nice, light yellow... a warm, pale pink, a nice, fuzzy feeling peach... how would it change recovery rates and outcomes? I think that, in the long run, it would improve, because it would help the people staying there not to feel so institutionalized. Even if it couldn't be the whole room, even one wall with a wide strip running through the rest of the room I think would help. Just something to break up the coldness.
I know that I've strayed from my original path a little, but I'm thinking about returning home right now, to my nice, bright little bedroom. It's not very big, but it's very bright. My dad and I painted it just a few years ago. It's light green with pale blue sponged over, then striped with a slightly darker blue (I had old wood paneling, so we free-handed down the panel lines) The ceiling is white sponged with the same blue as on the walls. The woodwork is white and natural, light oak, and my one door is white, blue, and green. My curtains are white with blue and green sheers under, that in the sunlight blend to make an awesome aqua color. My carpet is a light sandy color, like the bottom of the ocean. Water seems to rule my life sometimes, I'll admit... but it's so soothing to me.. the sounds, colors, slow yet strong nature of it. I can't wait to be back into my cozy little room at home. I think getting out of the bland tan of my bedroom here, if only for a few days. I know it'll soon be permanent, and I am counting down the days... not just for the color of my room, but the comforting feeling of the colors in my house.
What colors make you happiest? Do you agree that colors play a part in people's moods? Do you think hospitals, jails, and colleges should paint their walls something other than sterile white or gray? How does color impact you?
